Steam-fry onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms in a heavy non-stick skillet over high heat until softened, adding water by the tablespoon as needed to prevent sticking and burning. Add vegetarian hamburger crumbles, barbeque sauce, and tomato paste mixture. Cook, stirring, until the sauce is the desired consistency. Spoon over the split buns or fill them like a sandwich.
